Green Day and producers have gotten the green light from HBO to mount the American Idiot Broadway musical as a film. The journey from stage to screen has been in the works since 2011, when Tom Hanks was reportedly circling the project as a producer. In 2013, Rolin Jones completed a script for a film adaptation, which has yet to begin production. Now, the project is finally moving forward, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told NME.

Armstrong will likely star in the show as the character, Billy, the role he portrayed on Broadway. “That’s the plan right now, yeah,” he said. “We’ve got a green light from HBO, and the script is currently going through a couple of rewrites here and there, so I’m not sure when exactly we’re going to start shooting, but it’s definitely all systems go at the moment.”
