Green Day’s 2005 album American Idiot was a total departure from their previous efforts. The new musical direction didn’t stop it from becoming a massive success. While the band charted new territory in making American Idiot, the whole process from conception to release was captured and documented by John Roecker. Ten years after American idiot impacted music, the documentary Heart Shaped Like A Hand Grenade is set to hit theaters on October 15.
The trailer for the film hit YouTube and shows the band experimenting with new sounds and creating what would become the album that brought us hits like “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” and album jam “Jesus of Suburbia.”

Roecker says the film was pieced together from nine months worth of footage with Green Day. The film came about when lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong called Roecker to talk about making American Idiot and Roecker responding by saying he wanted to film it.
